Happy new year 2025!

We are excited to bring these updates to our community and look forward to your feedback. As we continue to develop the next version 3.1.0, we remain dedicated to supporting and enhancing version 2.x.

What’s New in OpenVidu 2.31.0

Kurento Media Server 7.1.1

One of the major highlights of this release is the update of Kurento Media Server to version 7.1.1. This update brings a host of improvements and new capabilities:

  • Update to Ubuntu 24.04: Kurento is now supported for Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble). This update includes several crucial package updates, enhancing the stability and performance of the system.
  • GStreamer 1.24.2: Upgrading to GStreamer 1.24.2 significantly boosts the system’s performance and stability. This version resolves several issues, including a pesky bug related to recording H264 from iOS and Safari.
  • Libnice 0.1.21 and LibSoup 3.4.4.
  • Added DTLS State: The WebRTCEndpoint now reflects the DTLS state through a status property, enabling applications to receive updates via Kurento events. This enhancement improves the security and reliability of media sessions.
  • VP9 Support: With the GStreamer update, we’ve added VP9 support to Kurento, including VP9 support for WebRTC. This provides improved video compression efficiency and quality.
  • Initial AV1 Support: We’ve also introduced initial support for AV1, a next-generation video codec. While not yet functional for WebRTC, this sets the stage for future developments.

Dependency Updates

In addition to the Kurento updates, we’ve made numerous updates to OpenVidu dependencies to ensure security and compatibility:

  • OpenVidu-browser and OpenVidu-node-client: These dependencies have been updated to their latest versions to fix vulnerabilities and improve performance.
  • OpenVidu-server: Some dependencies have been updated to enhance server stability and security.
  • Production Deployments: We’ve updated the versions of nginx and coturn to ensure robust and secure production environments.
  • AWS Deployments: Our OpenVidu AWS AMIs are now based on Ubuntu 24.04, aligning with our commitment to using the latest and most stable technologies.

Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for being a part of the OpenVidu community!
